South Jersey rapper, singer and songwriter CreNaetive released her latest smash "Growth," and we were lucky enough to get to know her a little more, as well as chat with her about the single.
We can tell “Growth” is a heavily personal song from the start just by listening to the lyrics. What inspired the track?
To be honest, 2020 inspired this track. With all the chaos going on in the world that piled up on top of life situations I was already dealing with, I found this moment of enlightenment where I realized how much I had grown as a person both mentally and emotionally. We all have our own struggles, but facing them is what makes us who we are. That was the lesson I was faced with sharing with this track.
You founded your own production company and we think that's amazing, especially as an independent artist! Can you tell us what inspired this and what a day in the life of working with other creatives in various mediums is like?
It’s invigorating. I love working with creatives that don’t share the same medium as myself. It’s a fresh perspective, a new inspiration; sometimes I feel like they help me more than I help them and that really the intention. The whole point of the company is to push new creatives to reach their goals. Whether that’s becoming your own company or just trying to figure out where your craft fits in. I want to get rid of the idea that we are only using our craft as a hobby. My dream is to help people understand that our crafts aren’t just for play, but that we can live and sustain ourselves this way, INDEPENDENTLY. It’s been a blessing to be able to influence young minds, and those not so young to just believe in themselves. We aren’t bred to believe that what we love is a career option. I plan to change that.
Do tracks like “Growth” come easily to you conceptually? What part of the song came to you first?
No, they do not; at least not usually. But I have to say that as of late, a lot of my newer songs are on this wavelength. The, I guess, tagline bars; because I wouldn’t necessarily call it a hook; came to me first. It was more interesting to see how it came to life after I just kind of ran with the idea of growing as a person and an artist. If you don’t really catch the words in that tag you could almost get an entirely different message or feeling from the song. That’s intentional though. I like when people can relate in different ways, because that starts a conversation. I can only hope the songs to come can follow these footsteps accordingly.
What prompted you to begin writing and recording your own music to share with the world?
Is it weird to say I don’t know? Haha. Music has always been a part of my life. My mom used to tell me how I couldn’t go to sleep as an infant, without her playing Anita Baker’s ‘Sweet Love’ or ‘Angel’. So you could say to a point, that the music is engrained in my spirit. But as people it is our purpose to share our spirit with the world and hope is has an impact on someone in a good way. The only way I know how to share music is to write my own stories and song them to anyone that wants to hear.
If you could give any advice to your fans who are aspiring artists, what would it be?
My advice would be a simple 3 step message:
1. Define your purpose: does the art make you happy? And that goes for any medium; is this craft your pride and joy?
2. Make a statement: Explain through your work, why you’re doing what you’re doing, and why you feel you have to do it.
And 3. Make the decision: If you could answer both one and two without much struggle, my question is what are you waiting for. If you answered one and struggled with two you need to dig a little deeper. And if you couldn’t answer either, keep looking for what you love.
Once you do that there’s not much else to say but to continue pushing towards your goals and take a chance on yourself because you can never let yourself down, you can only grow from experiences.
What can the world expect from you in 2021?
2021 will bring my second EP, entitled Sufferance. Growth is the first single from that project, and the rest of the songs are basically built around the central theme of getting through a tough time and coming out stronger on the other side. I hope to also debut the first collaboration from my production company in 2021 as a formal introduction of what it is that I have been doing, and plan to do going forward. If all goes as planned, 2021 will be a true manifestation of all that I’ve been working towards in 2020.
